Tile Painting Workshop

“Azulejo”, the painted ceramic tiles that adorn many of Portugal’s historic buildings, are a defining feature of the country’s architecture. Derived from the Arabic word ‘az-zulayj,’ meaning polished stone, these tiles have a history stretching back centuries and are more than just decorative accents; they play a vital role in preserving the history and identity of Portugal. In this workshop, you will design and paint your own decorative tiles using a variety of colours and techniques under the supervision of local ceramic artist José Conceição, a member of Loulé’s vibrant arts and craft scene. All materials are provided, and you can take your finished piece home as a painterly reminder of Portugal.
